The Current is based on rivers in the southwest. While the southwest is primarily a desert, more than 30 million people live here. In a few decades the region’s population will double while the amount of available water will decrease. Most of these 30 million people use water without thinking about where it came from or where it’s going. The San Juan River flows through Colorado, New Mexico and Utah. A small group of friends will set out on five week expedition to understand the condition of this majestic river basin. They will talk with farmers, scientists, lawyers, professors, river guides, and public officials about society’s effects on the river. Filming and research will start at the river’s source in the San Juan Mountains. From the source the group will ski, hike, kayak, and raft more than 400 miles to the Glen Canyon Dam. The expedition will descend more than 10,000ft while travelling the longest undammed section of river in the San Juan River basin. They will travel the course of the Animas River until it joins the San Juan River in northwestern New Mexico. From the confluence of the San Juan and its largest tributary, They will raft and kayak down the San Juan River and across Reservoir Powell.
The team's travel across Lake Powell will feature the use of solar powered electric motors and solar panel canopies that were designed and manufactured for The Current. This system was designed and created by Jack’s Plastic Welding and Solar Works. We are excited to test this new technology for the first time. The rigs we will use are prototypes, the first of their kind.
